Buying GPUs doesn’t deliver AI value, according to AWS

Most organizations are approaching AI adoption completely wrong, repeating the same mistakes they made during early cloud migrations, and it’s costing them millions without delivering real business value.

In this Techzine TV interview, Martin Elwin, technology director for Northern Europe at AWS, we talk to him about many topics, including why simply buying GPUs and placing them in data centers fails to generate AI value. He shares insights from AWS’s expected $100 billion infrastructure spend and we discuss what organizations actually need to succeed with AI.

Elwin believes AI adoption is fundamentally a board-level question rather than an IT department problem. He also gives us some interesting insights into which industries are actually best positioned to benefit from AI.

What you’ll learn in this video

We speak with Elwin about the strategic thinking behind AWS’s recent AI Factories announcement and get into how this offering differs from traditional infrastructure approaches. We also discuss the disconnect between infrastructure investment and actual business outcomes that he sees across customer conversations.

The interview then gets into the European Sovereign Cloud that AWS launched earlier this year. Part of the conversations digs into the including technical details about how AWS achieved complete isolation from other regions. Elwin explains who this offering targets and why most customers will continue using standard commercial regions.

For organizations struggling with production AI deployments, Elwin shares insights on the new Amazon Bedrock AgentCore capabilities, including how evaluations help detect drift in AI models and why continuous testing has become non-negotiable for AI applications.

Key topics covered

  • Why $100 billion in AI infrastructure spend is needed and where it’s going
  • The critical mistake organizations make treating AI as a technology problem
  • How AWS AI Factories solve the managed services challenge for controlled environments
  • Technical architecture of the European sovereign cloud and its isolation mechanisms
  • Why regulated industries are ideal candidates for AI adoption
  • Amazon Bedrock AgentCore capabilities for production AI monitoring and drift detection
  • The role of security agents and continuous testing in AI deployments
  • Specific Amazon learnings applied to customer supply chain optimization

Elwin also addresses the sovereignty debate happening across Europe, offering a pragmatic perspective on when emotional responses need to give way to granular technical assessments. He shares frameworks AWS uses internally at Amazon that customers can apply to their own AI initiatives.
