Global cancer research needs a data platform that can support it

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI) in Melbourne, Australia, does very important work. However, the IT infrastructure that powers some of that important work needs to keep up. We had a conversation with Christine De Nardo, Chief Operating Officer of the institute about this.

The Challenge

ONJCRI faced significant data storage challenges due to rapidly growing research data (currently 250TB, with projections of groups that will generate 100TB annually). Their previous storage solution was nearing its end-of-life, impacting research efficiency.

The Solution

To address this, ONJCRI partnered with HPE, implementing HPE Alletra storage in combination with Qumulo’s cloud data platform. This hybrid infrastructure solution has:

  • Streamlined data sharing with global collaborators
  • Improved researcher productivity
  • Reduced the institute’s environmental footprint
  • Freed the small IT team to focus on innovation and AI development

Results

The new system, implemented a year ago, has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from researchers, and can also play an indirect albeit important role in attracting the right talent.
